Official opening of Tongham Wood - 15th April
Tongham Wood has had its new interpretation boards installed and this marks the culmination of over four years of work restoring the wood. It has been hard work but the results speak for themselves. Some residents will remember what it used to be like with limited access, overgrown and subject to dumping. Now it is somewhere popular with dog walkers, with increased accessibility and welcoming wildlife.
To mark this event there will be a formal opening of the wood on Sunday 15th April at 10.30am. We are lucky enough to have Cllr David Munro, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Surrey County Council who will conduct the opening ceremony. This will be followed by a walk around the wood.

Bursting into life
If you go into the wood today you will find new life growing as bulbs appear plus buds and new leaf growing on trees. TWIG have also re-planted some fruit trees, that had been damaged, along the desire path where some of the old orchard trees still remain. The gales brought some trees down (including an old pear along the desire path)and a number have been cut up and cleared. It is not all doom and gloom when trees come down however as now light can enter those areas and new ground cover and wild flowers can grow.

New habitat area for Tongham Wood
TWIG are hard at work in the winter season when the wood is dormant but volunteers have a limited period of a few months to get all the trees in. On Sunday 17th December, with the support of a Woodland Trust Tree4All grant, a new habitat area was created with the planting of 25 new trees at the top end of the wood. There is a mixture of oak, sweet chestnut and hornbeam that will be suitable for coppicing in the future. Following a festive barbeque TWIG volunteers were able to plant a further 500 bluebell bulbs, 200 wood anemones and 200 snowdrops that will either flower this year or next.
